Voyager School - Success in gaining Specialist Media Arts Status

‘It is a challenge in applying for specialist school status. This DfES programme and status is a wonderful opportunity to work with others to create a plan in order for the school to raise standards using a specialism as the key driver.

The Voyager School has gained approval to be Peterborough’s first Media Arts School from September 2007. This is a tremendous achievement before we have opened for business! We have has to raised £50,000 in sponsorship, written an exciting and innovative bid and been externally assessed by a specialist from the DfES. We are grateful to our partners and sponsors: Bouygues-UK, Buckles Solicitors, itv Anglia, Nexus Consulting and the partnership fund at the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.

The sponsorship funds will be matched by the DfES and we will invest £150,000 into the capital development of our state-of-the-art new building to enhance the resources for students and community use. In addition, over the next five years we will be able to draw down an additional £1 million of government funding to assist us to realise our plans.

Neil Thompson, MD of ITV Anglia said, “The Voyager School is quite simply one of the most exciting and innovative educational projects in the country. ITV Anglia is delighted and proud to be partnered with such a ground breaking venture.” Our plans are ambitious and as well as delivering the National Curriculum our mission is clear. By 2012 The Voyager School will:

·        Be a world class school at the forefront of innovation and education in Media Arts;

·        Inspire, engage and enthuse all students with a love of learning through the arts;

·        Be a centre of arts and cultural excellence extending, engaging our local and global community;

·        Equip students and the local community with key employable skills, creating tomorrows leaders;

·        Raise the aspirations of students and prepare them to become fully participating citizens;

·        Have created an Artsmark golden cluster of primary schools as an outward demonstration of excellence in the provision of arts education’.
